(Summary of Friday Sermon)

After having greeted everybody with the Salutations of Peace, the Khalifatullah read the Tashahhud, Taouz and Surah Al Fatiha and then he read the following verse of the Holy Quran:

Fabimaa Rahmatim-minallaahi lina lahum. Wa law kunta fazzan galiizal-qalbi lanfazzuu min haw-lik : Fa-fu anhum wastagfir lahum wa shaawirhum fil amr. Fa-izza azamta fatawakkal alallah. Innallaha yuhibbul-mutawakkiliin.

And it is by the great mercy of Allah that thou art kind towards them, and if thou hadst been rough and hard-hearted, they would surely have dispersed from around thee. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them, and consult them in matters of administration; and when thou art determined, then put thy trust in Allah. Surely, Allah loves those who put their trust in Him. (Chapter 3 Al’ Imran Verse 160)

This above-mentioned verse is the same verse which I recited last Friday in my sermon and is the continuation of the Friday Sermon of last Friday 05 June 2009.

In the light of this verse, I thus cite a Hadith where a companion (Sahabi) has reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said:

“If a person whom Allah has established as guardian and chief over you shows inadequacy in his responsibilities towards the people, and does not care for their well-being, after his death Allah will not let him enter paradise and will not forgive him.”

In another Hadith, Ibn Umar (May Allah be pleased with him) has narrated: “I heard Allah’s Apostle saying, “All of you are guardians and responsible for your charges: the Ruler (that is, Imam) is a guardian and responsible for his subjects; and a man is a guardian of his family and is responsible for his charges; and a lady is a guardian in the house of her husband and is responsible for her charge; … So each of you are a guardian and Allah will question you on the accomplishment of these responsibilities.”

In the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam there is a central committee and its auxiliary organisations. You must be aware that each office-bearer is a guardian in their respective circles. If any office-bearer in Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam is not doing his work properly, or not giving his work in the cause of Allah enough importance, then he must be aware of this Hadith which I have just mentioned. This is a warning which the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has given his Ummah: That Allah the Almighty will question you on your responsibilities, if you have accomplished them like they should be. You will have to stand before Allah and account for each and every action of yours; this is really frightening if you think of it!

Moreover, in the Hadith it has not been said that when you will be questioned, there will be a chance that you will be treated with kindness (in case of wrongdoings) or that you will be saved therefrom. No! On the contrary the Holy Prophet (peace be upon him) has said that Paradise will be forbidden for this kind of person. This is indeed frightening if you think of it; May Allah give the opportunity to each and every office-bearer to accomplish their responsibilities in the best of ways. Ameen.

I thus cite another Hadith that each member of the central committee and the members of the auxiliary organisations can put into practice. Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) has reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: “Make all possible efforts to prevent the Muslims from obtaining punishments. If one can get a solution to the problem, then resolve the problem as quickly as possible. It is better for an Imam to forgive by mistake than to punish by mistake.”

If each among us reflects upon this Hadith, the least error that a chief commits whereby he applies his authority, by his arrogance and hatred that he has, look at the disasters that he brings upon himself without thinking, whereby he will be accountable to Allah for his action. Instead of resolving the problem in a civilised manner, he has seized the situation to make matters worse. But if he had resolved the problem without further complications, he would have saved himself from the punishment of Allah, and furthermore he saves his Muslim brothers from the punishment of Allah.

There is another Hadith reported by Hazrat Ibn Abbas where the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: “Allah will not complete the needs and objectives of a chief responsible of the belongings of the Muslims, as long as the person does not accomplish the needs of these people.”

This Hadith must attract the attention of all the office-bearers of the Central Committee and its auxiliary organisations that a great responsibility lays upon you all. Thus, you must not think that when you are an office-bearer, that you have only to sit in the committee, talk a lot but void of practice. You may think that when you would be sitting idle, all problems, disputes between people would be resolved if you just sit in the committee, discussing great plans without fulfilling them. I have seen those types of people who just sit in the central committee who talk a lot but are not prepared to put into action anything they discussed. They are the laziest persons and just good to issue orders. Thus, you must not become like these people who in their laziness do not do anything, who are arrogant, who like criticising and are keen on acquiring the goods of this earth.

I make an appeal to all office-bearers in the other countries that if they do their work with fear of God without criticising the others, and that each of you is serious in your responsibilities and work which you have got, then you will become active further and will acquire discipline in your work, and will do it with love and lots of humility. Then you will see the level of spirituality increase (in you and in the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam) as a whole.

Thus the Hadith that I have mentioned is making you understand that you must accomplish your responsibilities in the best of ways. When all office-bearers will understand these Hadiths well and will put into practice all their planned works (for the cause of Allah), then all works will become easy and by this means, you will be able to accomplish all your responsibilities where all people will automatically respect you. Then the situation will not present itself where you ask people “to respect you” or “when I enter, all of you must stand”. What I am telling you is a reality; there are no lies in it. This is a thing that I have personally witnessed in Mauritius in the Jamaat Ahmadiyya when the so-called Amir enter a function, the function is stopped and all people sitting are made to stand up to let Mr. walk by till he sits on the stage. If one has not stood up, this means according to these kinds of people who are thirsty of power, honour and are authoritarians that you have showed no respect whatsoever to the so-called Amir! They use their power and authority to make people afraid. Honour comes from Allah. He gives honour to whomsoever He wants and dishonours whomsoever He wants.

These kinds of persons are not only thirsty for power, authority, but are also double-language, double-faced and they are only good to back-bite others to make-believe that they are good people. Allah the Almighty has given them a long delay for them to repent and ask forgiveness (from Allah). Allah is not in a hurry with them. Allah is giving them little blow by little blow, but nevertheless they are not taking these warnings into considerations. So fear the day where Allah the Almighty will seize these kinds of people where no one will be able to plead for his comrade.

A person who works for the religion of Allah, must have lots of humility, a good education and he must internally spiritually prepared that people when looking at him will accept him easily, and will not see him or that which he preaches as a burden for them. That is why the Quran is superior to the other sacred books. The other books say to do this and not to do that, whereas the Holy Quran says a thing and gives the reasons behind it. The Quran does not issue orders in vain, but it creates in the heart of people the desire to obey the orders it issues. One way to obtain success is that you must make the people understand with lots of love and humility, and not with arrogance. When you issue an order, do it with love and humility and make them understand properly. Moderation and words of wisdom are two things which make a community progress. A word of wisdom is such a word that when others hear it, they want to hear it again and again and express their desire to hear more of it. When people begin to create such a spirit (of goodness and humility) it is then that they will make progress.

The presidents of the Jamaat or the other office-bearers must know the problems of our brothers and sisters also; whatever problems they may be facing. We must not say that this problem does not concern us, and that this is only his problem. To go and collect Chanda or Jalsa Salana funds, you accept to go door to door and make them understand that they must pay these funds. There are brothers and sisters who are in difficulties but unfortunately the presidents and treasurers do not understand them; and therefore they force these people to pay beyond their capacity. You must learn to know their problems and be lenient with them, especially in these times of crisis where jobs are scarce and prices of commodities have risen up. There are some people who even have to pay for their children exams fees which are quite costly. These kinds of office-bearers are only aware of only their own problems, and would want people to understand their problems, but they are not at all ready to understand the problems of others and alleviate their problems. When this situation materialises in a Jamaat, it is then that problems crops up, and there instils in it clashes.

Moreover, I attract the attention of the presidents, treasurers of our Jamaat, we must not fall into the same abased situation and arrogance that these kinds of people have fallen. By the grace of Allah, this has not yet happened. I pray that this never happen in the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam.

If a person works for you (in your house) or at the Jamaat’s level, the presidents, and treasurers must watch over the works of the workers of the Jamaat and see to it that these workers obtain their salaries at the right time and are given the right amount of money agreed upon. Even the members of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam, if a person works at your place, from whichever faith he or she professes, you must pay that person his or her salary. You must never steal the salary of a worker, because its consequences before the eyes of Allah are very bad.

I advice all office-bearers who are found in the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam in Mauritius and in other countries, each of us must examine our level of fear of Allah, our level of piety. To better understand this, I will cite a Hadith where Hazrat Mu’az bin Jabal (May Allah be pleased with him) has reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said:

“Wherever you are, always be fearful of Allah (adopt piety). If you have committed a wrong, so do a good action after this. This good action will erase this wrong. And deal with people in a good way.”

Abu Burda (May Allah be pleased with him) has reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has sent Abu Musa and Mu’az bin Jabal each in a part of Yemen. Then he advised them: “Create facility for the people and do not put them into difficulties. Spread love and happiness but not hatred.”

Hazrat Aisha (May Allah be pleased with her) has reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: “O Allah, if the one who is at the head of my people and mistreating them, then you also mistreat him. And the one who is at the head of my people is treating them with kindness, then You also treat him with kindness.”

Thus, the work of the presidents, office-bearers and others is that first of all they must create a respect and love in all members of the Jamaat Ul Sahih Al Islam, and then afterwards create this same sentiment in the heart of other people.

A president or office-bearer has not been vested these mundane responsibilities only to think that they have become the Master of all powers. Thus, a president must respect his members of the committee (secretaries) and give their suggestions value and reflect on them (if they are worthy to be taken into consideration).

I have just remembered a Hadith which I will cite before you, where this can help each of us to better understand that in Islam it is forbidden to desire for oneself to become chief, or office-bearer and to undertake great responsibilities. Religion and politics are two different things.

When you work for the religion of Allah, there is no mundane reward for you to obtain, neither money, nor becoming rich. You must work day and night following the Islamic law (Shariah) and if you fail in this, you will be responsible before Allah. Working for the religion of Allah is something clean, pure and sacred, whereas in politics, politicians devise all sorts of plans to obtain power and to fill in their pockets, and to be successful in their mission, they do not hesitate to lie, to fool the people, to make empty promises, to bribe the population to obtain the election. Thus, they try to obtain power to do dirty works, without any shame, and without fear of Allah in their hearts. The people have voted them to represent them, the country as a whole, but what do they do? They do not hesitate to betray the people.

But as for the office-bearers who work for the religion of Allah, they are completely different from these politicians. They do not hesitate to do lots of sacrifices; even they are ready to sacrifice their time for the work of Allah. They also sacrifice their money and persevere in this noble work. In all communities, it is like this (especially in Islam) where God-fearing office-bearers do not have any desire to occupy such and such post in Islam. But when they obtain a responsibility they are afraid lest they are not able to accomplish their tasks correctly. Such sincere office-bearers, who have fear of Allah in their hearts, and do their work properly and only for the pleasure of Allah, they will obtain their recompense, a great recompense only with Allah, both in this world and in the next.

The Hadith is as thus:

Hazrat Abu Musa (May Allah be pleased with him) reported that he went to the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) along with his two cousins. One among his two cousins said: “O Messenger of Allah, nominate me as the Amir of one of the state (countries) which Allah has given you.” And the other cousin also said the same thing. Thereupon the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: “By Allah, we do not confide to someone a responsibility which he himself desires.” Furthermore Abdur Rahman bin Thamura has also reported that the Holy Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) has said: “O Abdur Rahman do not ask for any key post, because if this was to be given to you as you asked, its burden will be upon you. And if you receive this responsibility without you asking for it, the help of Allah will be with you.”

I recall that when I used to work for the account of the Ahmadiyya Association and when there is the Majlis-e-Shura and general election, I noticed that some people had the habits to come just for the eyes of people, so that they can obtain their votes and key posts. There were even some who used to do canvassing to obtain votes for himself or someone else. It is most unfortunate to see this in the Jamaat of the Promised Messiah (on him be peace), for these types of people would be elected to key posts in the Jamaat and obtaining honours without them making the efforts to work with dedication for the cause of Allah. They would be issuing only orders, and when there are some functions, they will be foremost to attend these functions with dining jackets and ties and their mission would be only to command their surroundings and sit on the podium. There are even some who would come as if heads of States have come, and the cameramen would be clicking their photos and camcording them. These kinds of people are a malediction for their people (Jamaat) and for themselves. Allah says about these types of people:

“So woe to the praying ones, Who are unmindful of their prayer! Who do (good) only to be seen” (Chapter 107 Verse 5-7)

They only want to show people, only for ostentation; they do not have any desire to work sincerely (for the cause of Allah). It is those who work voluntarily who are sincere in their work. The desire that a person have to become popular is that which corrupts him. It is because of this desire that many people have lost their path (right path) completely. This happened in the past and will continue to happen. Develop the fear of Allah in your heart. And keep well in mind that you must do His work (the work of Allah) only to obtain His pleasure and reward, and not the praise of people.

May Allah enable us to do His work only for His cause and pleasure. May Allah have mercy on both you and me. Ameen.
